Sigh, why do Christians often say the universe came from nothing according to the big bang. The big bang says nothing about what came before it, there could have been a universe where all matter orbited a giant purple elephant for all we know. However as a biblical literalist, you must believe god created the universe form nothing as the bible says that.
To-morrow, and to-morrow, and to-morrow,
Creeps in this petty pace from day to day,
To the last syllable of recorded time;
And all our yesterdays have lighted fools
The way to dusty death. Out, out, brief candle!
Life's but a walking shadow, a poor player,
That struts and frets his hour upon the stage,
And then is heard no more. It is a tale
Told by an idiot, full of sound and fury,
Signifying nothing.

They even named it, "apologetics"
personally I don't even see why they bring up the big bang, because I can tell you that from my experience, my religious beliefs have nothing to do with science either way. I accepted and loved science as a Christian and still do now.
If any thing the big bang is somewhat conducive to the idea of a deity popping the universe into existence.

Maybe it's a case of hedging one's bets: "If I don't question science on universal origins now, then how am I going to look when I suddenly start doing it the moment they definitively discover the godless processes behind such a thing?!"

Maybe this is overestimating there knowledge on the subject, but they should know that what happened before the big bang (Failure of language noted) may not be knowable, and all depends on if we study what is beyond the universe. However as it is, and as it only seems possible, we can only study up to one planck time after the big bang at best, the other I thing we would know is if we have a oscillating universe. If thats the case we will know what came before this universe, because the laws of physics may change and the universe will contract. Then it will be safe to say that before this universe was another similar to it.
