Wow.  I actually cannot believe an argument that is happening here.  Basically it boils down to Women = birth, Men = power.  Yeah that's completely fair.

Sigh, yes women give birth.  But it takes two.  And both sexes deserve respect since they are equal in intelligence.  However look at how many female cardinals there are.  Or priests.  They are literally banned.  Or whatever it's clear women have zero effect on catholicism, they are second class citizens indoctrinated like the males.  They literally CANNOT have an effect on the doctrine or policies of the church.  So that's fair how?

Ok so I'm a white male from a privileged country.  I might have made it far if I believed in god.  But how can women, blacks, or any other minority actually think that catholicism considers you?  I mean seriously?

In my experience forums tend to be male driven (other than the rare female specific ones) so yes you'll see more males here.  But if you look among the more educated population atheists tend to be both male and female (education is where atheism lives).

I disagree. I don't think giving spiritual life is any more powerful than giving physical life.

If you think giving birth is not a powerful thing, then perhaps you are the misogynist? Wink

...Just kidding. I know you're not that. But seriously, don't undermine a woman's power to carry life and give birth.

In my humble opinion, it just comes down to men and women not always having the same abilities. They are both still equally great, equally powerful, and equally important. Just in a few different ways. Men cannot give birth, and women cannot give spiritual life. Neither is better than the other. Just different. Smile

They clearly aren't equal enough to hold equally high positions in the church.

You said women can't give spiritual life. And then you said majority of catholic school teachers are female. Does not compute.

You still fail to address that both men and women are equally vital in procreation, but women have no part in the giving of 'spiritual life'. btw, what is that exactly?

I suspect that "spiritual life" is an entirely meaningless phrase designed to placate women who have no power in the hierarchy. Sure, women give birth, but that seems entirely irrelevant.

Oh, and I should clarify... women can be spiritual teachers. They just can't perform the sacraments, so they can't be priests.

Well we believe that spiritual life is a very real thing, so to us it is not just some meaningless thing we made up to oppress women lol. But as someone like yourself who doesn't believe in it, I can understand why you'd feel that way. Just know that we really do consider it a fundamental part of our faith. Smile

Women can be theologians and teach the faith.

But when I say give spiritual life, I am referring to performing the sacraments. I should have cleared that up earlier, my apologies.

Yeah, I get where you're coming from.

I fear that getting you to believe it is a real thing is part of the placation itself. I just feel sad to see what is blatant sexism in my eyes being justified by intangible phrases which undoubtedly came from those same males in charge.

I can't deny it; I think religion is one big con. But I respect that from your perspective, it's very real.

If you're prepared to watch some heathen TV, one of my favourite guys Don Baker does a great piece here explaining the sorts of reasons I have to think it is a con. Move to 4:00 in the video.
