LOL, Bella. I just think it's amusing that the UK ignores what it actually deems as credible threats...but simultaneously pumps money into a deterrent that is only a deterrent to a legitimate nuclear power, a legitimate nuclear threat...and we have to be top of that list to any sane human being...except for the fact that you get your nuclear merch from us in the first place.,.....and I don't know that there's anyone else out there that would nuke the UK to begin with, that isn't already deterred.
Don't you ever wonder whether or not you're being had to the tune of hundreds of billions of pounds by your besties? Im as big a patriot as the next guy named Bubba...but honestly, I don't know how we get away with this shit sometimes.....

It does actually matter, otherwise they would broadcast the location of the 4th sub, which they don't. The sub would be in open communication, which it is not. That is the purpose of nukes on a sub, stealth, hidden from potential attack (i.e. high sneakosity coefficient). Therefore it does matter where it is not. I don't care if it's only one sub.
I'll say again, there are more cost effective ways of nuke deployment and delivery. The nuke sub of the cold war mentality is out dated.

Trouble, in the case of the trident program...is that 3/4 of them -can be- destroyed and the remaining sub really isn't capable of inflicting retaliatory armageddon the way their full fledged us counterparts are. They are smaller, carry fewer missiles, and fewer warheads...and there would only be one of them left to retaliate...if it could retaliate at all....and that;s assuming that british allies haven't already turned the world to glass.
I, like you...don't know why we keep pumping money into cold war relics, on either side of the pond, regardless of whatever inconsequential differences we may have in what we take to be sneaky, lol. It would seem to me, that a competent modern MAD policy would center around bioweapons, not nukes or subs.

Unfortunately I don't think nukes are going away anytime soon. At least not in my lifetime.
Bioweapons would take a shit load of R&D and may be less accepted than nukes.
Non lethal chemical weapons might be more accepted, less costly, easily deployed. But they also have drawbacks.
