Could happen, but who is going to run again either Trump or Pence?  Seems like in the past couple weeks they're announcing a new one every day or two.  It will be interesting to see once the primaries start.

It isn't stamped in stone that Trump will be the Republican nominee.  Likely, but his support among mainstream Republicans has been eroding, and it's entirely possible that he could be challenged for and lose the nomination.

It's not definitive, but we'll find out soon enough.  Seems like time has blown by since he was election, and now it about another year the 2020 primaries will be in full swing.

So if Trump really wanted a wall why didn't Trump work this hard for the wall during the 2 years Republicans were in control?

Why did Trump & the GOP keep putting this fight off, time after time, when they were in charge?
teachings of the Bible are so muddled and self-contradictory that it was possible for Christians to happily burn heretics alive for five long centuries. It was even possible for the most venerated patriarchs of the Church, like St. Augustine and St. Thomas Aquinas, to conclude that heretics should be tortured (Augustine) or killed outright (Aquinas). Martin Luther and John Calvin advocated the wholesale murder of heretics, apostates, Jews, and witches. - Sam Harris, "Letter To A Christian Nation"

I think the Senate needs 60 votes to pass this, so they never had all the votes to just pass it. That being said, they had a much stronger hand back then than they do now. Given that Trump had moderated his stance on this mid-December, only to go full steam ahead after some people on Fox goaded him into it, this whole thing might be nothing more than the result of his fragile ego being bruised, and the Senate GOP not being willing to break with him yet.

The shutdown has slowed economic growth, and is starting to head in the direction of a contraction. This shouldn't be surprising, because your average government worker has lost $5,000 in pay so far (a combined total of about $200,000,000 per workday).

Don't worry! Trump is helping by removing more workers from furlough and requiring them to work without pay! His polling has been ticking down since he announced he'd be "proud" to shut down the government last month. We'll see how long he and the GOP hold out on this.

the Shutdown is one of the reasons Trump might not get re-elected in 2020 due to the toll it will take on the economy.

If it continues to the point where it is legitimately hurting the economy, all of Trump's talk about the economy will turn to empty words, this would kill his chances of re-election.

And the fact that Congress and Trump approved a plan to back pay people when the shutdown ends is somewhat of a good sign.

Eventually the economic pressure and strikes from people like the TSA is going to force Trump or congress to accept a deal.

The shutdown will end within the next couple of weeks. February at the latest.

Something is going to break and someone is going to get hurt (or worse). He has had almost a million people going without pay for almost 4 weeks now. He is stressing a very large group of people, and someone is going to snap. He has pushed the shutdown far beyond the point that anyone before him has considered to be reasonable, so this will not pass the 'reasonable person' standard in regard to criminal negligence, reckless endangerment, or willful blindness. If something horrible happens as a result of this shutdown, he is going to be directly responsible.

Trump can always blame it on *drum roll* Democrats. You forget that in eyes of Trumpanzees Trump can do no wrong no matter what he does and he can't tell no falsehoods no matter how big and farfetched lies he says. These are the times we live in so get used to it. For one group of them Trump is the second coming of Jesus and for the other group Trump is someone for whom Jesus would vote for.
