Social distancing vs a day at the beach

RE: Social distancing vs a day at the beach
Perhaps the issue with coastal cities has more to do with them being cities and less with them being by the coast, wouldn't you agree?

These twatwaffles are crowding onto beaches for swimming, sunbathing...

Good luck with that.

I guess we will call them the control group - in testing social distancing....

But, that's just like, your opinion, gnarly dude. [/surfer] Big Grin   I'm quite annoyed by these people, because they'll be bringing it back home with them.

Population is one leg of the problem. Consider that the ocean has a whole raft of creatures living in it- it is FAR from sterile.

From what I've seen, many places that are being asked to stay home still allow people to go for walks. I think it's important that people take advantage of that. Social distancing does not mean you neglect sunlight and exercise. If anything, there's an ample literature on the effects of stress and depression on the immune system. Staying in bed eating and watching television, which many people are bound to default to, is going to affect them physically and mentally.

When it comes to beaches, there's a difference between spring breakers congregating around bars and music, and families keeping their distance and enjoying nature. There's a right and wrong way to do things.

I agree. Environments also affect pathogens in species-specific ways. Some pathogens can thrive in ocean water and stomach acids, others don't. Whether or not seawater renders SARS-CoV-2 inactive is a possibility worth researching at some point. My line of reasoning is based on the fact that beaches are in constant motion, which both washes away what's on the skin surface, and also reduces the concentration of whatever is in it.

You're already supposed to be washing your hands and practicing cleanliness. You might therefore think dunking everyone in soap will solve the problem too. Can you think of any reasons why it wouldn't? *cough cough*

Yep, millions. The kinds of millions you find on beaches. The infected aren't exactly unwashed. Just stop.

How a pathogen enters your body plays an important role in how the disease progresses. Washing your skin in running water helps remove pathogens that might spread to more vulnerable areas of your body. Simply put, washing helps prevent sickness, it does not cure the illness. That's why dunking people in soap or the Atlantic doesn't solve the problem.

If you're worried you'll get sick going to the beach, don't go. Just know it has more to do with paranoia than anything else.
