If my honesty is hurtful to you, I'm afraid there is nothing that can be done about it. I am not going to lie, and as they say, sometimes the truth hurts. If you want to believe in god, I am not going to stand in your way, but don't ever expect me to dance lightly around your faith to protect anyone's feelings. Religion, especially Christianity, and Islam, are divisive, misleading, and harmful to humanity, and I could never live with myself if I don't speak my mind about it whenever I have the chance. Think of all the people hurt by religion, and if you can't, read a history book. Just pick any one of them.

You're wrong, Aunt Pam. I love myself enough that I don't put any stock in a book that diminishes my value as a woman, or a person (the bible). I love myself enough to educate myself, and question everything because I deserve to know the truth, even if that truth is that nobody knows, and anyone who claims to know is a liar.

It's taken me years to get to this point where I can and do love myself. When I was a Christian, I was too riddled with guilt for doing things that I thought made me a horrible person, but after much introspection, and enlightenment, I realized those things made me nothing more than human.

I volunteer at nursing homes, visiting the lost and forgotten. I work as a pregnancy crisis counselor, and hold hands with young girls who are about to have an abortion because their christian parents would disown them, and never taught them to protect themselves from unwanted pregnancy. I love by showing no judgments, and being there for anyone who needs me.

I am not ashamed of myself, I am pleased with myself, and I love myself. Your judgment upon me that I don't love myself is errant and biased by your religious beliefs that just because I don't love your particular god, I must not love myself. A Hindu could just as easily say you don't love yourself, because you defy and refuse to bow down to Lord Krishna, and they would be equally as correct in their assertion about you, as you are in your assertion about me.

Love, to me, is something that is given without strings attached, and without judgment. I hope one day, you will know what I mean by that. God is not love. God is a figure based upon the moral and political climate of iron aged desert wanderers, and I love myself too much to be mired down with all that.
