Oh, and I hope I don't know what it's like to be a 12 year old boy, considering that I'm a female and was a 12 year old girl once. Duh.

Start with "What do you think about.......?" or " Do you like ................?" (teacher, class, music, clothes, hair............) That will start her talking. Agree when you can, politely disagree when you must. See where the conversation takes you.
When comfortable then ask "Would you like to............."?
